John 16:1-15

John 16:1-6-Jesus continues (15:18-16:6) to teach the second indispensible lesson concerning how they are to live in His absence…how to face opposition.

John 16:1-4-He says that He has told them these things ahead of time so that when they happen they will remember that He had warned them and they will not fall when they happen (:4).  Why would this sustain their faith?  Because it will remind them of His foreknowledge and Who He truly is…the “I am”.  With that in mind…they will have faith to trust Him, no matter what happens.  It is an amazing thought that Jesus is aware of those things that cause us difficulties and loves us enough to give us the resource necessary to stay faithful when they happen.  His followers are to: 1-realize that He knew it was going to happen; 2-anticipate and receive the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

John 16:2-Those that persecute them will do so in the name of God.

John 16:7-15-Jesus teaches the disciples the third indispensible lesson concerning how they are to live in His absence…the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

John 16:7-Amazingly, Jesus tells the disciples that it is actually to their advantage that He leave.  It is only through His leaving that the Holy Spirit can come.  As intimate and personal as their relationship with Jesus has been…their spiritual lives will advance to an entirely new dimension when the Holy Spirit comes.  It will include everything that they had experienced while Jesus was with them physically, plus entirely new elements.  He will personally send the Holy Spirit to them.

John 16:8-15-Jesus elaborates on the ministry of the Holy Spirit.  He will:

  1. Convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (:8-11). This will happen through the proclamation of the Gospel by believers.
  2. Guide believers into all truth (:12-13a). Imagine what it must have been like for the disciples during those next 6-12 months as the understanding of the truths that Jesus had taught them began to come to light in view of His death, resurrection and ascension.
  3. Disclose the future and what is to come (:13b). What confidence, what faith they must have gained as they realized the absolute, total sovereignty of Jesus over all of their lives…past, present, and even future. Their boldness and courage would be unstoppable.
  4. Glorify Jesus (:14)…and in turn, glorify the Father, because all that Jesus gives them originates with the Father. Picture what their worship services must have been like…as believers began to share testimony of what God had done that week. Thousands being saved.  The sick healed.  Demons cast out.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, I pray that You will help me to respond in faith and obedience to the things that You do in my life.  I am unable to understand truth without Your assistance…so please guide me.  Help me to live my life in a way that is an appropriate response to what You reveal concerning the future.  And, show me how to give glory to Jesus with my life.  And Lord, I pray one more thing…move in our church like You were moving in the day of Pentecost!
