March 10 – Thoughts About God For My Grandkids

March 10

Bible Reading: Mark 13:1-13

Topic Summary:

God wants the Gospel, the message of Jesus, to be proclaimed in every country in the world…to all the people of the world.  You and I are responsible for telling them.  Imagine if we did that for our entire lives…but then it stopped with our death.  The next generation, our children, wouldn’t do so.  How many people would die…die without hope…die without peace…die without love…die without Heaven?  We can’t let that happen.  You must explain to your children that they also have a responsibility to tell people about Jesus.  You must teach them how to do so.  And the best way to teach them…is to let them watch you.  By the way…when was the last time that you told someone about Jesus?

Thoughts about God for My Grandkids:

How many people do you know personally…20, 30, 50, 100?  Well, stop and consider if everyone that you know personally…also knows that many more people personally.  So, if you know 100…and each of them knows 100…that would be a total of 10,000.  That is a lot of people.  And after the 100 that you know personally…you would only be one person (or step) away from the rest of the 10,000.

That is kind of the idea behind a theory that every person in the world is only 6 or fewer steps away from every other person in the world (3 steps or fewer in the US).  It’s called “six degrees of separation” (degree means step) and was first proposed by Frigyes Karinthy in 1929.  That means that there are only 5 people between you and a guy who lives in Mongolia.  Or, 5 people between you and a girl in Australia.  Or, 5 people between you and a man who lives in New Bern, NC.  Hey…it works.  I live in New Bern…and you know me!  What a coincidence.

Anyway, think about that.  There are 7.6 billion people in 193 countries in the world.  The world population will grow by around 83 million more people in 2018.  And you are only 6 steps away from any one of them.  There are some people who have done studies and say that while this theory looks good on paper…it actually will not work.  For instance, they say that there is no connection between isolated groups of people who live deep in the jungles of Brazil and have never had contact with the outside world.  Whether, or not, it is actually 100% accurate…just the idea that I am only 6 steps away from “most” of the people in the world is still amazing to me.

That brings me to a disturbing thought.  Jesus made it clear that it is His desire for every person in the world to hear the Gospel…the message of His love, of His death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead, of His forgiveness of sin, and of His promise of eternal life to everyone who believes in Him.  He wants everyone…all 7.6 billion people (and growing)…to know how they can go to Heaven.  Now, that is not what disturbs me.  What disturbs me is that it has been 2,000 years since Jesus was here…and they still don’t know.  It is estimated that almost 1.5 billion people have never even heard the name of Jesus…much less been given a clear understanding about Him.  And what disturbs me even more…is that people are dying who have never heard about Jesus and will never, ever have a chance.  55.3 million people die each year.  And many of them have never heard about Jesus.  That’s what disturbs me.  That is what keeps your Granddad awake at night.

Now, why would that disturb me so much?  Because Jesus lives in my heart…and what disturbs Him, disturbs me.  And He is greatly disturbed that there are people who will die without ever hearing about Him and will not go to Heaven.

For many years I have said that I have one single desire, one single ambition in my life…to go to Heaven and to take as many people with me as possible.  That is what I want more than anything in life.

Before you were ever born I prayed for you.

  • I prayed that you would accept Jesus as your Savior while you were still a child.
  • I prayed that you would live in a way that pleases God.
  • I prayed that the Lord would give you a godly spouse who had also accepted Christ as a child.
  • I prayed that every person ever born into our family would be saved, as well. A godly lineage that would bring glory to God.

And there is one more thing that I have prayed for you…that God would disturb you…just like He has disturbed me.  That there will be a desire in your heart to reach people all over the world with the wonderful, life-changing message of the Gospel…that just won’t go away.  That you will spend your life telling people about Jesus.  Just imagine…7.6 billion people in the world…and each one is only 6 steps away from you, and me.  Let’s go.  Let’s tell as many people as possible.

Oh, it’s going to be so amazing when we get to Heaven.

  1. Someone will walk up to you that you told about Jesus…
  2. and with them will be someone that they told about Jesus…
  3. and with them will be someone that they told about Jesus…
  4. and with them will be someone that they told about Jesus…
  5. and with them will be someone that they told about Jesus…
  6. and with them will be someone that they told about Jesus.

You are only 6 steps away from reaching the entire world for Jesus.

Not long ago (February 21, 2018), one of the greatest preachers of our day died…Billy Graham.  They say that he preached to over 25 million people during his lifetime.  That is amazing.  Look what God did with one man.  The legacy of his life has motivated me once again to tell people about Jesus.  If God could use him…then He can use me.  I’m going to reach the world for Jesus.  I’m starting tomorrow.  I’m going to tell as many people as I can about Jesus.  Will you join me?  I hope so.  Let’s reach everyone in the world for Jesus.  They’re only 6 steps away.  That’s not very far, at all.

Love you more than bunches and bunches,

Granddad
